OK guys so today I sat down with a Friend, Amanda, and we did an interview. So Here it is.
Q) When did you decide to join/start a band?
A) A couple of us were actually in bands before Dying To Live started. Haynes played in a cover band and I started a band called Sacrificial Rose. As far as Dying To Live goes, it got started full time in January of 2005.
Q) Do you wright your own songs or play pre-written ones?
A) Both. We love to wright our own songs, but sometimes we'll take a song that is already written and put our own spin on it. We call it Frakensteining. We did that with "My Savior Lives" and "Mosh in the River."
Q) What inspires you all to play?
A) We all love music and just love playing our instruments. Knowing that we play for God's glory is a big motivator.
Q) How long do you have to practice a song to get it right?
A) It depends on how a song is arranged and how technical it is. A simple worship song may take about two hours to master. But our heavy, technical stuff can take weeks, even months to master totally.
Q) Where do you want to play most?
A) Dude thats a hard one. Uh, right now we'll play anywhere that wants us. I mean we'll play for a plate of spaghetti and a Coke. Our dream gig would be a stadium show, co-headlining with Norma Jean and Demon Hunter. Dude, that would we awesome!
Q) How long have you guys been playing your instruments?
A) Uh, well I've been playing guitar and bass for about two years and I've sung all my life. Haynes has played drums forever, the dude was born with a pair of Vic- Firths in his hands! (laughs) Drew and Alex have both been playing for about a year and a half.
Q) What is the worst mistake you've made in front of an audience?
A) As far as screwing up how the music is played, your gonna screw up no matter what. You just have to accept it and try to get better.
Q) Does the band ever go through hard times or stress and pressure?
A) Not really. Your gonna naturally have a few bumps in the road cuz stuff happens. We're all pretty laid back dudes. I don't get worked up over it, I mean if something is supposed to happen God is gonna have your back.
Q) What are some of your favorite songs to play?
A) We love to play all kinds of songs. Definitely our original stuff and Norma Jean and Demon Hunter covers. I even like to bust out a ryzime on occasion.
Q) Do you hope the band breaks it big, or would you prefer to be smaller?
A) Every band wants to have their "Big Break." If we can make it big thats gravy, but we're not gonna compromise to get there. Being on the Underground is cool, in a way bands are more real on the Underground. But either way, it's up to God were this band goes.
Q) What's the most fun you have in the band?
A) Just hanging out at church or after practice. We love to play b-ball, even though we stink at it, and skate. Just hanging out with our friends.
Q) What does a typical day of rehearsal, practice or performance go like?
A) A typical practice goes something like this: Arrive at Haynes house and set up in the basement, practice our existing songs and talk about how we fell about the song and what it means to us, work on new songs, chill and drink a Coke and put on some tunes, pack up and say "Good Practice" and leave. When we play a we arrive and set up our gear, sound check, chill and eat pizza, play our set as loud and as crazy as we can can, hang out with freinds.
Q) Would the band ever change in any way if it ever did become famous?
A) In Dying To Live, we play the music we want to play. If we make it big, we're not gonna compromise just so we can sign a record deal. The only thing that is gonna change our style is God.
Q) What's the best thing about being in a band?
A) Free food duh! No really, just knowing that you are a part of a machine who's purpose it is to bring God glory.
Q) Are there any regrets concerning the band, and if so what?
A) No, not at all. God has taken us so far in just a year. Since we started we never looked back, we're not slowing down for anything!
Q) Does DTL play secular music along with Christian?
A) Yes, A couple of secular songs are actually part of our current set. We listen to secular bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Helmet, and Pantera for inspiration. It's always good to keep what you do musically open. But our lyrics remain strictly Christian.
Q) What's the funniest thing that has ever happened with the band?
A) Dude, funny crap happens all the time. A couple of months ago we were practicing a new song and I started playing the wrong riff. I had to stop and start all over. Stuff like that happens all the time.
Q) Is this just the typical garage band of teen guys, or is it something much more?
A) We still play in the basement, but we play really heavy, technical, difficult music. We take what we do very seriously, so we are way more than just a garage band.
Q) What is the exact purpose of the band?
A) To reach lost people via heavy music. We just want to be a light in a dark place and glorify God.
Thanks alot to Amanda, Couldn't have done this interveiw without you.
